{"id":296,"date":"2012-11-10T23:57:40","date_gmt":"2012-11-10T23:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bcpta.ca\/wordpress\/?p=296"},"modified":"2012-11-10T23:57:40","modified_gmt":"2012-11-10T23:57:40","slug":"fall-conference-with-dr-stuart-shanker","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bcpta.ca\/wordpress\/fall-conference-with-dr-stuart-shanker\/","title":{"rendered":"Fall Conference with Dr Stuart Shanker"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcpta.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/shanker.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-297\" title=\"shanker\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bcpta.ca\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/shanker.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4><em><strong>\u201cWe are in the midst of a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>revolution in educational\u00a0<\/strong><strong>thinking and practice.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Scientific advances in a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>number of fields point to a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>similar argument &#8211; that\u00a0<\/strong><strong>how well students do in\u00a0<\/strong><strong>school can be determined by\u00a0<\/strong><strong>how well they are able to\u00a0<\/strong><strong>self-regulate.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<h4><em><strong><\/strong><strong>-Stuart Shanker<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>On October 19, 2012 Dr. Stuart Shanker addressed\u00a0the audience of teachers gathered at the Marriott\u00a0Pinnacle Hotel in Vancouver for the annual British\u00a0Columbia Primary Teacher\u2019s Association Conference.<\/p>\n<p>He spoke to us about his five-domain model of self\u00a0regulation which includes:<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>The Biological Domain<\/strong>: how you respond to\u00a0stimuli at a biological level.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>The Emotional Domain<\/strong>: how you deal with strong\u00a0feelings<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>The Cognitive Domain<\/strong>: how you process, store and\u00a0retrieve information.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>The Social Domain<\/strong>: how you understand and\u00a0respond to social cues.<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>The Prosocial Domain<\/strong>: how you demonstrate\u00a0positive social skills like empathy.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers need to help children move towards\u00a0managing their own self-regulation.
